August is usually a quieter time on CCBC-Net--we know there are vacations to get in before summer's end, and a new school year and season of work to prepare for.
As we turn our attention from U.S. Hans Christian Andersen illustrator nominee Vera Williams to Lois Lowry, the U.S. Hans Christian Andersen Award author nominee, we hope some of you will nonethless feel compelled to speak up about Lowry's diverse and impressive body of work.
Lowry is an author whose works can be deeply probed by child and adult readers alike. There is such literary richness to her works, compelling stories and compelling storytellling. She has created extraordinary novels about the past, and provacative works about the future.
I appreciate Patricia Foster's observation about Lowry's work earlier this month on CCBC-Net, when she stated "There is something in Lowry's characters that all young peple can relate to emotionally. The emotions of growing up are profound and at times overwhelming. It is strength of character and belief in the future that bring young people through the difficult times of disillusionment and fear of adult responsibilities."
Are there Lois Lowry titles that stand out for you? What about for child and teen readers you know? Are there qualities that you see run through her body of writing that you especially appreciate?
