Announcement: Naomi Shihab Nye to Deliver 6th Annual Charlotte

Naomi Shihab Nye will deliver the Charlotte Zolotow Lecture on Wednesday, October 8, 7:30 p.m., at the Wisconsin Union Theater on the UW-Madison Campus. Her speech will be entitled "Just One Gazelle Would Be Fine With Me: Reading and Writing in Our Current World."

A renowned poet and writer for adults, Ms. Nye is also the creator of singular books for children and young adults. Among them are the poetry anthologies she has compiled to bring international voices to young readers in the United States, including This Same Sky: A Collection of Poems from Around the World (Four Winds Press, 1992), The Tree Is Older Than You Are: A Bilingual Gathering of Poems and Stories from Mexico
(Simon & Schuster, 1995), and The Space Between Our Footsteps: Poems and Paintings from the Middle East (Simon & Schuster, 1998). Her other poetry anthologies for youth include What Have You Lost? (Greenwillow, 1999) and I Feel a Little Jumpy Around You: A Collection of Her Poems and His Poems Gathered in Pairs (compiled with Paul Janeczko; Simon & Schuster, 1996). Ms. Nye's original writing published for children and teenagers includes the picture books Benito's Dream Bottle (Simon & Schuster, 1995) and Sitti's Secrets (Four Winds Press, 1994), the novel Habibi
(Simon & Schuster, 1997), and two poetry collections, Come With Me: Poems for a Journey (Greenwillow, 2000) and 19 Varieties of Gazelle: Poems of the Middle East (Greenwillow, 2002). This will be a free public lecture open to all.
