Thanks for the movies, Nick -- lovely job!
My memory of seeing and meeting Vera Williams is from the Children's Literature New England conference at Radcliffe College, in August 1999. She recreated her studio on the auditorium stage, including works in progress, and wandered about picking things up and telling us stories about them, as if we had been individual visitors rather than a few hundred people. It was a very creative (and effective) approach to a talk!
In addition to things already mentioned in some detail, I particularly enjoy the social realism of her books. Also, her books are full of genuine feeling, and always seem to strike the right chord -- perhaps because music is such an important element, as Dr. Smith pointed out.
