I was fortunate enough to see Vera B. Williams at Bank Street College in 2002 - she wore a shirt that could have been ripped from Mama's chair, pink roses and all. And she read from "Amber was Brave, Essie was Smart" which had received an award. Hearing her read made me realize that the book is poetry.

Hi,

Just thinking of Vera B.Williams makes me smile. She is so energetic and down to earth, it cannot help but be reflected in her books. She has me waiting for a sequel to a chair for Mama because she is pondering how to reupholster the chair!! she's tired of the roses. When I suggested plaid, she said, "Oh no! I could not make plaid so consistently correct throughout the book." That's an artist.

We shared a cup of coffee in her apartment one morning and had a warm conversation about Essie and Amber as they related to her sister and mine! How many times I have re-read that book and reflected on the family relationships it always makes me think of. In my case I think my sister was the one who was both Brave and Smart.

When I think of Lois Lowry I think of the endless discussion possiblities she has opened up with the events in The Giver. At the close of an intense discussion group meeting there was absolutely no agreement on how Jonas and Gabriel fared when they left "the community" Does anyone besides me think that the sound of MUSIC was particularly significant as a closing?
