I Capture the Castle

I went to see the film of "I Capture the Castle" yesterday. It's a favourite book of mine, and although not originally published as a YA novel (it pre?tes the category) it certainly is a favourite of many teenage (and ex-teenage!) girls I know. I thought they did a fine job of adapting the film. It's a long novel, and the film is two hours, and I felt they did a good job of keeping the whole of the story intact. If there were major plot omissions, I didn't notice them!

The casting was very good, and I particularly liked how they drew out the relationship/conflict between Cassandra and her father. They really caught the darkness of the father's story without it turning to melodrama, and I found it very affecting.

I suppose my only quibble would be that they really should have et Cassandra brush her hair more often! I think they made her a little more plain than the book suggests. How's that - making a character plainer than her literary predecessor!

I read a review that dismissed the film as dour and turgid. This is completely off the money in my opinion - there's a lot of humour in it (as there should be, the book is at times terrifically funny) and pathos, but it's hardly dour. Perhaps the reviewer had a bad stomach when she watched it or something!

On another note altogether, I have just had a wonderful couple of days with Bev Hock from University of San Francisco and her merry band of travellers! They had three days in Sydney at the end of their Australian trip and we had a jolly time. I organised a social function for them to meet some local authors, and we spent Saturday seeing the literary sights of Sydney. I don't know if Bev's signed back on to CCBC-Net yet (or even if her plane has touched down!) but if you're reading this Bev et al, it was fun! Come back soon!
