I took my 4th grade son and two friends to see "Holes" back in April, I think they had all just read the book for school and were really !!!! excited about seeing the movie
they liked the movie, all in all, and said they would recommend it, but ended up underscoring what Cassie said -"it's just not the same, you get more out of the book" was the general consensus ... they also found the book "more mysterious" and "complicated"
they also all agreed that's its better to read first and then watch!
they ended up being harder on the movie than I was, I actually liked it quite a bit (no doubt the fact that Louis Sachar wrote the script helped a lot) -- I've used the book for several children's lit classes and was afraid a movie would ruin it, so I was pleasantly surprised
