Movies and books

I had the same comments about Hermione from the beginning! Her character is an adolescent "ugly duckling" who will grow into her good looks, but the actress is adorable from the start.

However, I do think she has the *character* of Hermione down pat, and I've grown to appreciate that.

My husband loves the HP movies, but he has not read the books, and also he likes just about any movies with monsters, so he's not the best judge, IMO. I am guessing though that people who haven't read the books probably have no complaints about the films.

I am very picky about movies made from books that I love. In most cases, I do feel the movies fall short. Some I won't even see, such as the LITTLE PRINCESS film that moved the story from Victorian London to New York City, and cast a blond actress as Sara (I was a dark-haired child, and Sara Crew was one of my literary heroines--the fact that I could identify with her coloring, especially in the very blond world of Milwaukee that I grew up in, was very important to me.) My question at the time was, "would they cast a blond Scarlet O'Hara, and move GONE WITH THE WIND out of Georgia? Why, then, is it okay to do this with a children's book?"

There are two films that I think are better than the books they were based on. One is adult: THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR is better than SIX DAYS. The other is WIZARD OF OZ. Granted, it's been many years since I read the book, and perhaps it's fairer to say the book and the movie are equally good. But this is such a magical movie, and it's held up so well for 64 years.

I am looking forward to seeing I CAPTURE THE CASTLE. The British seem to be better about turning books into movies than are Americans (David Lean's wonderful GREAT EXPECTATIONS, and various Masterpiece Theater series are examples of that.)
