Echoing Katie's sentiments -- I, too, was quite concerned that Holes would get messed up as it came to a multiplex near you. Especially when I saw that Disney was involved in the venture (I was concerned the film would become either sugar-coated or turned into more of an action movie. And I feared all the historical elements would be, well, history.) My 12-year-old son and I went to see the film, nonetheless, and were both glad we did. Although
"movie Stanley" was not as I had orignally pictured (a common enough occurence in screen adaptations), we greatly enjoyed the film. I'm willing to bet that Louis Sachar writing the screenplay made all the difference between a good Holes film experience and a disappointment.
There's a reason I have a mug on my desk that reads "Never judge a book by its movie." I'm glad Holes was an exception, and if recent circ numbers are any indication the film drew many people to discover (rediscover?) a fine novel.
