Hello,

I'm new here and was planning to lurk for a while, but I just had to jump in on this. Louis Sachar was speaking here in Indiana on the opening weekend of the movie
"Holes". I was a little disappointed with the speech since I was expecting him to talk more about his books and he mostly dwelled upon the movie, but one interesting bit of information that he shared is that he had a cameo in the movie!

It was during one of the scenes in the old town of Green Lake where Sam is selling his onions. Sam says something like "Come over here and let me take a look at your head" and the man says "my head?" That's Louis Sachar. He said that he gave himself the line and that it was an improvised scene since the director had the last word on everything and he'd cut a lot of scenes. Then he decided that they needed to put something back in there. They decided to do the "onions are a cure for baldness" thing and they needed a bald actor. But they didn't have a bald actor--flash to Louis Sachar's head! He was perfect for the part, but he wasn't actually supposed to have any lines. He said that the first time they shot it he said "my head?" because he thought there should be some response to "let me take a look at your head". After that the director said that it was okay.
