I agree with many of your assessments. I also wondered if JK threw in some extra stuff to try and explain little details that people have addressed in fun, like why Harry's parents don't show up as ghosts, and why do the Dursley's keep taking Harry back if they hate him so much? These are questions that people have asked, but personally, I didn't need an explanation. I could have done without the scene near the end with Nearly Headless Nick. I also didn't like the details of why the Dursley kept him. Sometimes fiction just needs to be fun, no explanation needed.
