HP length

Re Connie's pilot and refreshing one's memory of the first four books: There is a webcast of Rowling at http://harrypotter.msn.com in which "a group of experts" summarizes the plots of the first four books. The experts turn out, of course, to be a lot of children of different ages, and their spliced-together recountings are a delight to see and hear. The webcast also includes Rowling reading from Phoenix (a section carefully chosen so as not to be a spoiler). It is archived for I think a week and is worth seeing for any HP fan.

Jennifer said she had kids in 3rd/4th grade who read the book in two days, and I can't help bragging:

I have a 12 year old nephew who read it in less than 24 hours. He left a phone message at 9:50 Sunday morning while I was at ALA - he had started as soon as the book arrived on Saturday (around 11 AM) and read all day, stopping only for food (After all, he said, he had to stay alive!). He had a good night's sleep and started again at 6 AM, finishing a few hours later. That's a little over half the time it takes to listen to the book on tape.

I'm stockpiling all other CCBC messages until I've finished the book myself . . . but I have to tell you all that the reason I'm not farther along is that my plane reading was interrupted by an off-duty pilot who sat next to me on the way home from Toronto. He told me it was all he could do to keep from reading over my shoulder, and he was looking forward to his upcoming week off so he could read the book himself, though he was considering re-reading the others to refresh his memory on plot elements. This guy was cool - a liberal arts grad. pilot, square-jawed and hook-nosed, who is not a bit hesitant to admit he's reading HP as much for himself as for his 9 year old son . . . so we talked about kids books all the way to Hartford . . .

I'll rejoin you all after I finish - sure wish I had a pair of 12 year old eyes!
