An editor is supposed to catch them," is a judgment about the editor(s).
In my experience, the book belongs to the writer...he/she agrees, or disagrees with the editor, the copyeditor, etc. and the editor is beholden to respect the writer's decision. One is not allowed to over rule the writer. Yes, there can be an attempt to "convince," the writer of this or that. Furthermore, sometimes a writer cannot "see it." He/she may be too close to the work, and does the best he/she can do at that particular time; the creative process is complicated, as is the writer/editorial relationship. My confusion is with the need to speculate on matters one cannot possibly know. Norma Jean
