Hi. I found the previous discussion of Canada's Raincoast being a publisher and/or distributor interesting, and read the following explanation in yesterday's Publishers Weekly online newsletter, PW NewsLine. This verifies how everyone was right!

Happy Harry evening to all, and to all a long night.

Nick Buckets of Rain: Literary Canadians Make It Big

Speaking of Raincoast, it's worth noting that the house is one of those Potter anomalies that, by winning over Christopher Little and Rowling, is able to publish one of the most anticipated books in years in a sizable territory.

A small Vancouver publisher of mostly literary fiction, it struck Potter paydirt before the first book came out on this continent when president Allan MacDougall made an off-the-cuff inquiry at Frankfurt. The company was already planning on distributing the book in Canada and walked away from the fair with a publishing agreement too. It has released Potter up north ever since.

For this title, the house is bringing out more than 900,000 copies of its adult and children's versions, about the same amount per capita as Scholastic is in the U.S.

Which brings us to another point - whether or not you've ever read a Harry Potter book. This is a question likely to be asked of you in the next few days, particularly by people outside the industry. If you haven't, instead of laughing sheepishly (our preferred response), consider that there's a silent non?pe-wearing majority out there. Even if Scholastic sells out its print run, goes back for five million more, and then sells that out too, 19 out of 20 Americans will still have not bought the book. That says something about bookbuying in this country, but, more important, that says something about our math skills.--Steven Zeitchik
