As I finished HP5 this weekend--sitting in the shade under a tree, smelling the remnants of lilac and beginnings of honeysuckle (I even envied me, ifthat's possible)--I have a few thoughts and comments.
Yes, Harry was full of angst, but he is in an impossible situation--a savior/dragonslayer/avatar, with no idea of how to go about it. His angst is that of a bright underachiever faced with a daunting period of years ahead of him. And I feel Harry did grow--I think that his discovery that James wasn't perfect, but as flawed as other humans, will lead him to re-evaluate both his treatment of others and his relationship with Prof. Snape.
I too liked the way Hermione, Ron & Ginny developed--and I think Lucy & Hagrid's brother have great potential.
Yes, it could have used a more aggressive editor--especially in the first few hundred pages--but the story (which is the main reason, I believe, for HP's popularity) moves right along.
And I agree, I want # 6--now!!
