I am very interested in how children will react to the length and to the story. I no longer live with a child who is interested in the series--they both have outgrown it.
I predict that most kids will react the way yours did--I like the image of meeting up with a long-lost friend. Most of the enthusiastic fans I know have read the others over and over and could care less about the length. There certainly is something satisfying about reading a big chunk of a book.
