Those of us at Scholastic who subscribe to ccbc.net have naturally been following the current discussion about Harry Potter with interest. Now, all of us will have an opportunity to hear and see J.K. Rowling herself read from her new book, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and answer questions about it, in a MSN.com web-simulcast from the Royal Albert Hall in London on June 26.
Scholastic and UK publisher Bloomsbury are co-sponsoring the event, which will bring the event live to millions of Americans via a MSN Live Webcast. This is the first time that an author has ever been the focus of a webcast of this magnitude.
Through the webcast, J.K. Rowling will treat millions of fans to an extraordinary afternoon beginning with a conversation between Rowling and actor/author Stephen Fry (who reads the Potter audiobooks in Britain). Rowling will then read personally selected excerpts and answer questions from children about her new book.
MSN will broadcast the entire event live via the Internet at www.msn.co.uk/harry potter at 11:00a.m.(EST) on June 26 in the U.S. The event will then be archived online for 7 days.
Many libraries are organizing parties and events around the release of the book. This web-simulcast, just five days after the book's realease, is another opportunity for librarians to create an event for kids and families, generate further excitement, and position their library as a major focus in their community for Harry Potter information and outreach, and enthusiasm about books and reading.
