In reviewing Seventeenth Summer for a master's thesis, sources indicated Maureen Daly's book was written for the adult market and simply found its popular niche in the perceived YA group at the time. Along with Catcher in the Rye, that new designation was attributed to it. I like that a book can dictate it's own market, irrespective of tailored marketing plans. But maybe that wouldn't happen today.
