I thought Steve Viggiano asked an excellent question:
<<My question is this: How do publishing houses determine what teenagers want to read?>>
I don't know about all publishing houses, but there is a wonderful editor at Viking, Sharyn November, who meets regularly with teens to get their input on YA novels. I'd be interested to know if there are other editors out there who also have teen advisory boards.
