Of course I realize that the term "soap opera" did not exist at the time. I was using it as an example. I think research will show you that although Shakespeare's plays were popular among royalty and common folk alike, he did not reach historic "genius" status till long after his death. Keep in mind that Barbara Bush enjoys "The Osbornes," but that doesn't make the tv show
"literary." Shakespeare was among the most enjoyable entertainment in his day.
