Hang on, I thought of a suggestion: Giving some page-time to realistic characters who aren't participating in whatever it is and have no plans to. The characters are aware of other characters having sex, partaking in illegal drugs, etc. but they themselves are dealing with their reactions to their friends doing this and to invitations to participate rather than simply partaking. Perhaps in such a story the ideal is having characters who make different choices and seeing where that leads them. I'm sure there are good books like this out there somewhere (aren't there?).
