the lower end of edgYA

I think it would be useful if somewhere in the edgy subject ya books there was a straightforward account of what was there, to warn the squeamish. Maybe in the subject heading? I know it seems square of me, but I see the readership as getting sharply divided so that YAs in the urban centers with relaxed open adults to talk to anyway are getting access, while a strong move for censorship is underway elsewhere. Some children/young people who could really benefit by access are being cut off from it by radical censorship.

And I can see why there is a push for censorship. I was somewhat repulsed by the steamy, raw excerpts laid out side by side (without therefore any sense of plot or character) by that group in Virginia -- was it Bammis?

I think it's true that there's a limited readership for edgy YA's --that children who actually have been abused often would far prefer fantasy. I think it's important to preserve potential access for all--Every book has its reader; Every reader has his/her book. Maybe some self limitations to access would guard against massive censorship by what is really a very conservative country. Think what has happened to textbooks.
