YA Literature on the Edge

Many thanks to everyone who participated in the lively discussion of poetry during April. We appreciated hearing your many inspired ways of making poetry a part of children's everyday lives, your favorite books of poetry and those specific poems that hold special meaning for you, your thoughtful opinions about illustrated poetry, and, in a few cases, your original CCBC-Net poetic creations!

It's time to change gears, and begin May's discussion of young adult literature with mature content, from books that openly explore sexuality to those that honestly reflect other challenging (often controversial) issues that are the realities of life for many teens.

Do you think that the number of high-quality books with "edgy" content has significantly jumped in recent years, or is this just part of a natural, on-going trend? Are authors, publishers and readers more receptive to content that was once reserved for adult books? What's your opinion of books that merit the adjective
"edgy"?
