Two courses offered at the Bank Street College of Education in New York City.

Finding Diversity in Excellent Children's Literature (PreK-8) TEED629N July 2 and 3, Wednesday and Thursday, 9:30 am-4 pm Registration Deadline: 6/26 This course examines issues of diversity in children's literature and how excellent literature can help children learn about differences among people, including ethnicity, race, language, gender, class, economic status, sexual preference, and ability. In addition to identifying and defining the characteristics of a literature of inclusion,
"extra-literary" considerations such as omissions and distortions in text and pictures, helping children respond to literature, issues in publishing multicultural literature, and finding the best that has been published.

Selecting and Evaluating Recently Published Children's Books TEED505N July 16 and 17 Wednesday and Thursday 9:30 am-4 pm This course gives participants the opportunity to examine a wide selection of recently published children's books in order to develop and refine selection criteria. We will identify key developmental themes and discuss how to incorporate them into the language arts class and interdisciplinary studies. New books from the Bank Street Bookstore will be available for review. For librarians, teachers, and reading specialists. Section 1 (Grades PreK-4)



Instructor- Lisa Von Drasek is the children's librarian at Bank Street College. She wrote and edited the New York State Summer Reading Manual Discover 2000 Read. Lisa is a children's book reviewer for Kirkus, Nick Jr. Family Magazine and writes a monthly column about children's books for the classroom which appears in Teaching k-8. A Library of Congress American Memory Fellow, she served on the 2003 Newbery Committee.
