Hello CCBC-Net Members,

I joined the list a couple weeks ago, and this is my first post.

I am a writer and librarian in Pittsburgh, PA. Pleased to virtually meet you.

I hadn't expected my first-ever post to CCBC-Net to be about oral sex, but I wanted to reply to Monica's post, so that's how it's working out. :)

When I read her post, I immediately thought of a YA that includes oral sex. When my YA novel, MYRTLE OF WILLENDORF (Front Street 2000,) was reviewed by Publisher's Weekly, PW made special mention of its "hilariously referenced oral sex scene."

That scene was funny and literary and not demeaning to any of the characters. It is possible to write about oral sex in a way appropriate for adolescents to read.

I can't think of any topic that is off limits for YA literature. It's all about how the edgy topic is presented.
