I'm a huge fan of James Stevenson's "Corn" books - little books full of small poems that are just gems. All the book titles have the word "corn" in them: Sweet Corn Popcorn Candy Corn Cornflakes Just Around the CORNer Corn?d
What I love about the poems is that they do so well and so simply what good poems should do - help us see the very ordinary things around us in unusual ways. For Stevenson, rain drops tapping on a porch become little dancers with top hats and tails. Here's a look at an old woman walking down the street:
The Bent Old Woman
Every day The bent old woman Shuffles down the sidewalk, Inch by Inch.
From in front, She has no face.
From behind, She has no head.
All you see is Her coat, her cane, her courage.
