I wanted to mention that I've used Sharon Creech's LOVE THAT DOG with two reluctant reader high school boys---both loved the book. One boy, who is ESL, was inspired to write his own poetry based on the "simple" style of LTD. He was too intimidated to try poetry before. The other boy wrote a psychological profile of the mc in LTD. Hee---not the approach I expected, but it was fun to read.
