We utilize A LUCKY THING by Alice Schertle, illustrated by Wendell Minor, as part of introducing poetry to our eighth graders. There are visual aspects of Minor's paintings that repeat from page to page to help further tie the collection of poems together. There are also visual puns. And while the book would have been exceptional without the illustrations, those illustrations add another dimension to the work, and inspire students to consider accompanying their own poetry with visuals.
