You should definitely check out Anita Silvey's books--"Children's Books and Their Creators" and "The Essential Guide to Children's Books and Their Creators". These are encyclopedias of children's literature with entries on authors, illustrators, and issues in children's literature. Many of the illustrator entries discuss the techniques the illustrator uses in the body of his/her work as well as the evolution of that artist's style over time. While it doesn't deal specifically with Caldecott winners, many illustrators whose books have won that award are featured.

Hi
I was wondering if anyone is familiar with any books or other sources that discuss the artwork that was done with the Caldecott medal/honor winners. What I am looking for is a description, explanation about the techniques that the illustrator used to c reate the wonderful illustrations for the books. Many of the books do not contain any comments about the artwork. When I introduce the books to students, I'd like to discuss the way the art was created, the materials used, what made this artwork stand out from the rest.
The only things I have found are books telling about additional projects that children could do but these are not based on the techniques that were actually used in the winning book.
As you can tell, I have no art background. When I ask the art teachers, they usually say they are guessing. Because you are not looking at the originals, they can not always tell me exactly what was done.
Please let me know if you know of any place that I could acquire this information.
Thanks,
Karen Scheidegger
