To be sure, the audience for POSTCARDS FROM NO MAN'S LAND is a small one, but I remain unconvinced that it is really that much smaller than previous Printz books such as SKELLIG, KIT'S WILDERNESS, MANY STONES, A STEP FROM HEAVEN, FREEWILL, THE ROPEMAKER, and HEART TO HEART.
A couple members of last year's BBYA committee maintained websites with teen comments about the nominations. Both sites had a handful of comments on POSTCARDS ranging from mixed to positive reviews, and from teens as young as 13. My perception is that most BBYA members were able to find some teen feedback on the book, even if members of this listserv have not.
Chambers himself has identified his audience as ages 16", a bit higher than the 12 designation we typically think of as young adult. As I look around, I think there are a growing number of books like this, crossover books, if you will, which appeal just as much to adults as to a sophisticated young adult audience, books such as POSTCARDS, THE LIGHTKEEPER'S DAUGHTER, BORN CONFUSED, THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER, TRUE CONFESSIONS OF A HEARTLESS GIRL, THE STERKARM HANDSHAKE, BLOODTIDE, ACROSS THE NIGHTINGALE FLOOR, and TROY, just to name a few.
