Poems by Heart

I once hearc a wonderful rationale for asking student -- encouraging them-- to memornize poetry. Years ago in a workshop on poetry, the wife of my UNH professor of freshman English, Max Maynard, said that the effect of memorizing poetry is that "It changes the beat of the heart."

Her argument feels true. In a deep, comforting way, I love the poetry that I memorized as a 7th grader -- The Landing of the Pilgrims by Felicia Hemans, October Snow by Lew Sarrett (sp?), Snowbound by John Greenleaf Whittier, The Concord Hymn by Ralph Waldo Emmerson, and others.

Thanks for this thread.
