Um, using this book with "young readers"? Nope, can't say that I have used HEART TO HEART with young readers (which term I usually attribute to those beyond beginning readers and up to middle readers, a definition which could be way off base). But, like Catherine (Atkins) I have used this book: 1/ to create programming for teachers to use in classrooms with readers in high school (ages 12 and up); 2/in programming (myself) for high school students and 3/working with those students in a one-to-one situation. In all three instances, the responses have been overwhelming positive, encouraging and exciting.
The book (and the entire concept of photos to poems and vice versa) is a most dynamic process. I have found it a means to engage readers of all levels, interests and even non-readers. Most rewarding were the students who otherwise found poetry either something distasteful or unaccessible. A favorite follow-up activity is to pass-out illustrated postcards and have the YAs write their poetic responses.
Karen Sue...who was really happy to see this book as an Editors' Choice pick last year....
