Illustrated Poetry

I would be interested in what the poets think about their poems being illustrated. I know that this is almost entirely in the hands of the editors/publishers, but how would they prefer it? I do think that for younger children, good illustrations enhance the poetry. For older .... well, they can read a good novel, why not a good selection of poetry without a prop or enhancement of any kind?
Also, I'd like some good examples & suggestions of collections
(and poets) that highlight wordplay and lovely metaphor.
