One of the most skilfully edited and enjoyable collections of poetry for young people, aged anywhere between three and nine years old, is Simon James' Days Like This. James, poet, illustrator and collector has very senstively assembled a wonderful collection of short lyric pieces that capture both the passing of time, and the wonder of moments held in the mind's eye.
There's something loose-limbed and supple about the collection. It manages to celebrate both the physical and the philosophic in the child's world. The poems, including pieces by Ogden Nash, Marchette Chute, Eve Merriman and Charlotte Zolotow and the editor/illustrator himself.
"There are no good poems which are only for children", WH Auden said, which might partly explain the pleasure I find in Days Like This. There's not a bad poem in the entire collection, and moreover, Days Like This is carefully crafted to create a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. But then, that's what poetry does, doesn't it?
