Hello All,
Having Taught Primary grades for 14 years, and currently working as an administrator, I have never missed an opportunity to share poetry with the children that I have had the pleasure to teach. In fact I considered my duty to teach my class at least one song or poem each and every week. And we would sing and recite to and from all school field trips.
The first poem that I taught each year was one that I learned from my second grade teacher, Mrs. Seals, countless years ago. It's called "To School". Sorry but I have no idea who wrote it. It was the first thing that I was ever asked to memorized at sc hool, and the overwehleming sense of pride and joy learning I experienced learning it, gave me a life long love of verse.
A book that I found most helpful as a teacher is called Poetry Place Anthology, by: Scholastic which contains over 600 poems on almost every topic. Another Is called Honey I love By Eloise Greenfield, And of course some of my very favorite picture books are: Outside Over There, In the Night Kitchen, and Chicken Soup with Rice, by: Maurice Sendak, and Jimmy Lee Did It, by Pat Huthcins
Books written in verse seem to help children open up and begin to express themselves freely. Memorizing and reciting gives them self-confidence and courage.
It has been my hope that some of the children that I have taught have had those same feeling that I did all those years ago in Mrs. Seals' second grade class, and develope a life long love of peotry as did I.
