As we consider books of poetry and the visual images which accompany them, a book that comes to mind is HEART TO HEART: NEW POEMS INSPIRED BY TWENTIETH?NTURY ART, edited by Jan Greenberg (Harry N. Abrams, 2001). In this volume, writers were invited to write a poem inspired by the painting, photograph or another work of 20th century American art of their choice. This very intentional linking of visual art with poetry offers the reader a chance to see how each work may illuminate the other, and could be a great launching point for classroom discussion. Has anyone used this book with young readers?
