I completely agree with this statement, and am in awe of Chambers' gift. I hope I made that clear in my post. In fact, Jacob even discusses this very issue with Tessel, saying that he likes when those who live through history write about it themselves. And that is why I understood WHY the diaries were there--however, I thought their placement, and their introduction on top of all the other layers of the story, was too divergent from the story--too much for me, as a reader, to take in at that moment in the story. Other readers may feel this way (particularly young readers), but maybe not.

It is a beautiful, important book, and I will recommend it to others.
