RYLANT'S SODA JERK

One that always sticks with me is Cynthia Rylant's Soda Jerk.

Thematically similar to Spoon River Anthology, it tells the story of small town through the eyes of one main character. In this case it's a young soda jerk with a keen sense of the human condition.
To me it's not about more white space on the page...there is just something extremely satisfying about having a complete thought or viewpoint expressed through each poem.

It's a tidy format that creates untidy and expansive thoughts. It's a format that interrupts the reader...it stops them after each poem and says: now consider that one. I don't find that similar "pause button" in regular novels.
Enjoying this discussion very much, Nancy
