Chapter 3 - "Searching Pictures: The Caldecott Medal" in NEWBERY AND CALDECOTT MOCK ELECTIONS (Association for Library Services to Children/American Library Association, 2001) discusses the art work in selected Caldecott award and honor book titles and the Caldecott criteria.

Hi

I was wondering if anyone is familiar with any books or other sources that discuss the artwork that was done with the Caldecott medal/honor winners. What I am looking for is a description, explanation about the techniques that the illustrator used to c reate the wonderful illustrations for the books. Many of the books do not contain any comments about the artwork. When I introduce the books to students, I'd like to discuss the way the art was created, the materials used, what made this artwork stand out from the rest.

The only things I have found are books telling about additional projects that children could do but these are not based on the techniques that were actually used in the winning book.

As you can tell, I have no art background. When I ask the art teachers, they usually say they are guessing. Because you are not looking at the originals, they can not always tell me exactly what was done.

Please let me know if you know of any place that I could acquire this information.

Thanks,
