these past few years have seen a proliferation of "novels" with significant elements of poetry and/or verse in their substance.....and/or styles.......and since the "validation' of karen hesse's "dust" and some commercial successes by authors like mel glenn and others......editors/publishers have been eager to present these kinds of hybrid/synthesis/possible mockeries of use of either label...............certainly, a thematic collection of individual poems which moves a narrative line forward in some way will sell better...have paper edition.......and so on......when labeled a "novel".....as opposed to
"just" calling the book: poems..................but this varies so greatly from hesse to creech to krupnick to glenn to jackie woodson's new title: locomotion..............don gallo of the alan group of ncte has a list of more than 20 titles................................i do think this kind of:... novel-in-some-variety-of-some-kinds-of-poetry....is already a
(sub)genre of young adult long-form-fiction..................personally, i think it is great that labels are shredding and the labelling becomes more complex as forms and styles mutate and change............i began to see some of the difficulties when i published books of individual poems that "did narrative work"......... tornado... and others...for younger readers.............starting back in the 70's.................(never a fear of boredom for any of us............)
