Subject: [ccbc-net] Poetry Slams
Just wanted to let the CCBC community know that I tied for first place at last night's local monthly Poetry Slam. Our local slams attract a big teen crowd, an even bigger twenty-something crowd (we're a university town), and even a few old coots like me.
This month we veered from our normal read-your-own-original poetry and held a cover slam - read other poet's works. My round two poem was a recitation of the long fritter and sitter poem by Dennis Lee from Alligator Pie (I'm the only poet who introduces the occasional children's poem in the mix). I topped off round three with Arnold Adoff's "Listen to the Voice in Your Head" from his excellent Slow Dance Heart Break Blues.
Unfortunately, I lost the Sudden?ath Haiku-Off (we had 60 seconds to write a haiku with a teenage mutant ninja turtles theme - the theme tossed out by someone in the crowd - the disadvantage of being the old fogey in the bunch).
I was also invited to be part of a five-person troupe to open for California poet Derrick Brown when he arrives in Eau Claire May 8. We're creating a group piece around the theme "When I Grow Up" which will be interesting since I'm twice the age as the other 4 members. I used that fact to write the one-liner "When I grow up I want to surround myself with people younger than myself, smug in the knowledge that Keith Richards will always be older than me." I also got to name our troupe. We're billed as The Eau Claire Poetry Slam Women's Auxiliary Post 715.
In sum, poetry is alive and well in Eau Claire and these are only two poetry events going on - many, many events geared for the young, who are eagerly showing up to listen and perform.
