Cynthia Rylant's Something Permanent (Harcourt Brace and Co., 1994) is a wonderful collection of poems inspired by Walker Evans photographs. Young poets could certainly use this collection as a catalyst to write their own poems to accompany the pictures... or take their own pictures, etc...
Then there are the poems Jane Yolen wrote to accompany her son, Jason Stemple's, nature photos in a series of books including Wild Wings: Poems for Young People (Wordsong/Boyds Mills Press, 2002). Since she is on the list, I'd love to hear any comments she has about the process of writing poetry when the illustration comes first.
