"By heart"

I also always carry a poem with me when I have my backpack. It's laminated and by e.e. cummings "somewhere I have never traveled..."

But more important when I'm without the backpack, there are lines and lines in my mind, poems I learned "by heart" as a youngster from a generation expeceted to memorize a great deal. My mother knew gobs more. Isn't it interesting that we "learn by heart", not by "mind." In the introduction to my first anthology I wrote about the importance of the words of other people when we had none of our own.
