illustrated poetry from the past

I have to weigh in on the side of illustrations with the poetry. I also remember
(fondly) Robert Louis Stevenson's A Child's Garden of Verses and feel the illustrations enhanced the poetry for me (as well as the memory I still carry). Since poetry is very often read aloud, if you felt that the illustrations did not enhance the poem, you can always just read them, maybe discuss what images they bring to mind, then use the illustrations to show ONE point of view. Also, many children need the visual stimulation to really enjoy what they are hearing. Showing the illustrations can often help them begin to learn to visualize for themselves, if we make the time and effort to work with them.
