Why Is It Poetry?

During the weekend, "Emmaattic" wrote: "...For most of these, I still have to question: where's the poetry? This is not to diminish the books or say they don't have their own worth. Simply where is the poetry? "Stories" in poetry seem to be just that. Stories. I'm curious why they (authors and publishers) call them poetry instead. I'd love to hear some feedback on this."

I concur. I'm not sure about some of these recent "novels." Emmaattic's query is similar to one I want to pose. What do some of the teachers and librarians among us say when someone asks just exactly what causes a certain narrative to be poetry? Why is it poetry? Short lines? A subtitle announcing that this is really poetry, and not a wonderfully expressed prose narrative? What? Examples, please?

Peace, Ginny
