My new favorite poetry read-aloud is Love that Dog by Sharon Creech. I have used it with fourth-graders successfully; the students all wrote their own "Love That..." poems based on Walter Dean Myers' "Love That Boy". The book takes about 45 minutes to read aloud- I give the students hand-outs of the poems from the back of the book and we read the poems as Jack comments on them. I have had students as old as 13 listen with tears in their eyes as I read them this "novel".
