Megan shared >>favorite volumes of poetry published for children and young adults in recent years.<<
How about from the past? One of the first books given to me by my Aunt Susan was a find from her local used book store, an old copy of A Child's Garden of Verses, by Robert Louis Stevenson with color plates by Jessie Willcox Smith. I remember both poetry and pictures clearly these many (many) years later. Beautiful illustrations enhanced the experience of the written word to me as a small child--just as true today. (when done well...)
