I'm no expert either, but:
a) I just bought a book called "Don't You Know There's a War On?" by Avi, for my 10 1/2-year-old. I saw it in a store last week and thought it might be both suitable and interesting, in terms of giving him a little bit of a sense of history (it's set in New York City, I believe, during World War II, and is about a boy who whimsically suspects his school's principal is a spy, but then inadvertently discovers that the truth is even worse: the principal wants to get rid of the boy's favorite teacher ...
b) Samir and Yonatan is a novel that humanizes political/military conflict at a child's level. Would others recommend it as a story for children in these times?
