I have just finished it and I didn't like it much. It seemed to me missing in wit and energy. What amazing times were covered! The Amsterdam setting had charm. But the juxtaposition of the two stories just did not work for me; it was as if the two lives missed each other. I did not become interested in Ton or Daan. Grandmother Sarah never appeared and did not seem real to me, but I think she might have helped connect the stories. For young adults, there are surely many other books written mainly for adults that would be more rewarding.
