war books

I think Monica's words are very important to keep in mind -- that each child responds differently to stress and grief and fear, and we can't assume that any one book will be welcome or helpful to a group of children. (Except for Ferdinand the Bull, of course.)

After September 11 at our bookstore, we found that kids were asking for funny books, happy and silly books. Parents told us that their teenagers were curling up with old Beverly Cleary and Judy Blume favorites.

It's great to have access to books directly dealing with war and peace, but often kids (and adults) prefer to "come at things slant," if you know what I mean.

Cheers, Elizabeth
