Am not quite done with POSTCARDS but wanted to chime in before the discussion ends. I absolutely love the writing. The dialogue is so real, so character-driven. I am living inside the book as I read. But there are too many threads. When I got to the excerpts from the war diaries (James Sims, etc.) I wanted to shove them aside--and, in fact, merely skimmed them. What had this to do with Jacob or Geertrui? I muttered. It was enough, for me, to balance THEIR two stories, both of which I liked, and believed in.
For younger readers, I think the book is just too long, with too many different voices. Of course I often feel this way about adult books . . .
